4 Coursework Guidelines 1400-1600 words long Chicago Style formatting Times New Roman Font 12 pt Font 1 inch margins Double space Use 3rd person (No “I” statements)

5 Coursework Guidelines Can research outside of class Can write rough drafts at home I cannot edit anything for you Writing/typing will be done in class No peer editing

6 Coursework Guidelines Graded on totality of work—not just hitting a few key buzz words along the way Daily Points –Each day is worth 10 points Deduction of points each time not on task. Deduction of points for not having technology Lost Points –If you lose points for not having technology they can be made up by going to learning lab.

7 Research Paper Intro – Introduce your topic as well as create you thesis statement, the point you are going to make Body – Evidence that defends your thesis statement – RESEARCH w/citations (footnotes) Conclusion – restates your thesis and wraps up your paper. Summarize main points

8 Example Intro WWII was a long hard fought war were millions of people had died. After Germany was defeated in 1945, the United states turned their attention to the issues in the Pacific. Facing a Japanese enemy that would fight to the death with no possibility of surrender, the US government and president Harry S. Truman felt the only way to defeat the Japanese was to drop an atomic bomb.

9 Mock Thesis… THESIS - The atomic bomb was the only solution to end WWII. Using the text, research information to defend this position. Take notes, then write a 1 paragraph summary of your findings that you would use in a research paper on this topic

10 Cite the Source Using Chicago Style, properly cite this source both in the text and in a Works Cited page. Find a book somewhere in the room and properly cite that source as well. The return the book neatly to its original spot.
