Illinois CAS: The Course Applicability System A Presentation for the Illinois Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers Marilyn Marshall, Sheri Kallembach, and Daniel Cullen October 28, 2004 What’s New Under the Big Top With CAS?

CAS: the next step in providing effective support to transfer students http://www.transfer.org

CAS is a free service to anyone interested in learning either how courses will transfer from one institution to another or the degree programs institutions offer. CAS is a tool to support Illinois transfer students.

IAI: a statewide articulation agreement CAS: a tool to let users learn what IAI, and any other articulation agreements, mean to individual students. CAS is an information- access tool.

CAS is in use in several states, and more are considering adding CAS to their transfer student support services.

Under the CAS tent:  Academic Programs  Course Equivalency Guides  Academic Histories  Planning Guides  Student Services What is CAS? Basic Functions

What is CAS? Academic Programs Degree Programs Each member institution creates a list of their degree programs and program requirements. Users can learn what courses are required for each degree program.

What is CAS? Course Equivalency Guides Course-to-Course Equivalencies Each member institution maintains course equivalencies for acceptability of courses at their institution.

What is CAS? Academic Histories Courses Taken Each member institution loads their course inventory for users to create and store their personal course histories in CAS. These courses can then be evaluated against the desired degree program.

What is CAS? Planning Guides Transfer Course Applicability (how courses apply) Each member institution uses the combination of the Course Equivalency Guide and the Academic Program to show just how a course will APPLY within each degree program available in CAS. Color-coded guide shows: completed requirements, outstanding requirements, courses required, equivalent courses at the cross-listed institution, and courses taken (as saved in Your Courses).

What is CAS? Student Services Student Services at participating institutions Each member institution can provide links to additional information regarding services available, such as Admission, Registration, and Financial Aid.

Use CAS to Help students get where they want to go.

Who Should Use It? Students and those who advise them:  who know where they want to transfer and what their major will be. Use CAS to plan coursework at the sending institution that will apply to the baccalaureate degree.

Who Should Use It? Students and those who advise them:  who are exploring options. Use CAS to learn what degree programs are offered at participating institutions and what program requirements students would face. These students can also be directed to IAI and iTransfer.

Who Should Use It? Students and those who advise them:  who are enrolled in a degree program at a CAS institution, but who are also planning to complete coursework at another institution. Use CAS to select the transfer class(es) that will meet degree requirements.

CAS and IAI CAS works with IAI  IAI course numbers can be displayed.

CAS and IAI CAS works with IAI  Illinois could set up CAS similar to Ohio. For example, a completed IAI GECC package could automatically trigger the Planning Guide to show that all general education requirements are satisfied.
