2 Copy down Vocab  Imperialism – when strong nations take over the political, economic, or social aspects of weaker nations.  Colony – a country governed from the inside by a foreign power  Resource – an asset or source of wealth such as iron or oil  Exploit – to use something for selfish reasons  Racism – belief that one race is superior to another

3 Essential Questions  What were the reasons for Imperialism?

4 1. Industrial/Economic  Industrialized countries need raw materials and resources –Iron, rubber, timber, etc…  Why? – to maintain factories and production of their goods

5 2. Nationalism  Imperialism will increase national pride  By owning other territories, countries become empires –Measure of greatness & prestige

6 3.Religion  Catholics and Protestants want to “Christianize” and “Civilize” all people  They see themselves as carrying out God’s will

7 4. European Racism  Europeans believe they have a right to seize lands and dominate the other races because they are superior/advanced

9 Quote by Mr. Cecil Rhodes  “I contend that we British are the finest race in the world, and the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race…. It is our duty to seize every opportunity of acquiring more territory and we should keep this one idea steadily before our eyes that more territory simply means more of the Anglo-Saxon race, more of the best, the most human, most honorable race the world possesses.”

10 Two Types of Imperial Rule  Direct Rule – European power gets directly involved in running the colony.  Indirect Rule – European power allows local rulers to rule their own people but must follow European law.
