Vocabulary Mapping Students can participate in two tiers of mapping a vocabulary word or phrase with depth and complexity. Use this powerpoint to review the strategy and the templates to have students try it out.

Tier One YOUR TASK Using your vocabulary word mapping guide, dictionaries, thesauruses and any other resources, create a detailed vocabulary map of your word. You can arrange your map in any personal way you wish that makes logical sense to you, but you must be sure to include ALL the criteria. Be prepared to present and display your map before an audience. Quality work is required. Optional Challenges: Create one or more analogies with your word. Create a symbolic art collage that shows a variety of representations of your word (any form of your word) Create a skit from your “typical reference”. Goal: Students will understand that words are meaningful in a variety of ways depending upon their uses and their interpretations Thinking Skills: Curriculum Objectives: Building vocabulary Use of dictionary and resources Relationships to bigger ideas Logical writing and presentation skills

Word Typical Reference (Explain and describe a situation where your Word would be used) Synonyms Other original ideas for Your word map Related “Big Idea” words Dictionary Definition Key words used in definition Forms of the word And parts of speech Interpretation of definition In your own words Original Sentence using the word Revised sentence with added elaboration Antonyms Tier One

Tier Two YOUR TASK Using your vocabulary phrase mapping guide, dictionaries, thesauruses and any other resources, create a detailed map of your phrase. You can arrange your map in any personal way you wish that makes logical sense to you, but you must be sure to include ALL the criteria. Be prepared to present and display your map before an audience. Quality work is required. Optional Challenges: Create some analogies with your key words. Create a symbolic art collage that represents your phrase in a variety of ways. Create a skit from one of your “typical references”. Create a three-way-tie with your choice of key words/big idea words. Goal: Students will understand that words are combined to create meaningful phrases in a variety of ways and can be interpreted differently in context to the situation.
