4 Long Term Goal To focus on building the students’ vocabulary, helping them to incorporate the newly learnt words in their everyday language.

5 Short Term Goals  To provide repeated exposure to a variety of words, in varied contexts.  To offer opportunities to use the word orally and in writing.  To facilitate students to use context clues to determine word meanings.  To enhance reading comprehension skills through the development of vocabulary.

7 SUGGESTED ACTIVITIESDETAILS Using Thesaurus and Dictionary The teacher will introduce the use of Dictionary and Thesaurus to the students in order to help them learn to read the different symbols used in a dictionary to learn words and their spelling, meaning, origin and pronunciation. Gift a Word Three students of the class will be asked to gift a word to their fellows each week. Those words will become a part of vocabulary calendar prepared by the teacher. Whole class will practise using the words in their own meaningful sentences.

8 SUGGESTED ACTIVITIESDETAILS Word Bingo This will be a kind of vocabulary quiz which may be taken every month as well. The teacher will Write 10-15 words from students’ most current vocabulary list on the board. The students will choose 5 of the words and write them down. Now the teacher will read the word definitions in random order and have the students cross off the words on their list that match the given definition. The first one to cross off all the words calls bingo and wins. Variations of this activity include calling synonyms or antonyms. Word Tree The students will draw a word tree to learn the formation of new words through the use of prefixes and suffixes.

9 SUGGESTED ACTIVITIESDETAILS Understanding Meanings from Context The teacher will encourage the students to use the context for determining the meaning of each highlighted word. The students will be asked to consult the dictionary to see if they have guessed the meaning correctly. Adding Description The students will be introduced to different descriptive words, including onomatopoeia, adverbs, adjective etc. The students will be asked to create a piece of writing to describe an event, a favourite place, a personality or a book using the descriptive words which they have learnt.

10 SUGGESTED ACTIVITIESDETAILS Vocabulary Booklet By the end of the term, the students will be ready with their vocabulary booklet. All the vocabulary activities carried out during the term will be compiled in the form of booklet which will assess the progress of the students in terms of vocabulary enhancement. I Know English – Writing Task At the end of the term, the students enriched with vocabulary will be asked to write a personal saga on the entire term’s experiences, friends made, favourite teachers and subjects, knowledge gained etc. the students will conclude their writing task with their advice to the next coming batch of the students.

11 Solutions to Anticipated Challenges CHALLENGESSOLUTIONS Students who do little independent reading are exposed to significantly less words per year than students who read often. Students can be given homework of compulsory reading of Young World. The teacher can do the follow up by planning some vocabulary activities in the next class. Lack of motivation to learn new words as mother tongue is Urdu in most homes.. The teacher can introduce vocabulary games such as, online games, pictionary and taboo. Lack of independent practice.The teacher can arrange for frequent quizzes in class as a starter activity.

15 Conclusion Vocabulary leads to effective listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The extended instruction will promote the active engagement of students with fluency in language and bolster their confidence in oral communication.
