7 KOICA CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAM OVERVIEW Suitable development approaches are urgent and adaptation should be mainstreamed into development assistance; Focused is on neighboring region “East Asia Climate Partnership” was launched to address climate-related issue and SD in the region (KOICA, 2009)

8 KOICA CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAM STRATEGY US $200 Million assistance package (2008-2012) Embassy recommends, MoFAT & KOICA agree, KOICA implements Aid themes: Education, health, governance, rural development, ICT, industry and energy, environment and gender, disaster relief & reconstruction, MDGs, climate change (KOICA, 2009)

9 KOICA CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAM VISION Reduce carbon emission without stiffling economic growth Move towards low carbon society Set a milestone for green growth (KOICA, 2009)

10 KOICA CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAM Identify an “East Asian Low Carbon Development Path” leading to a synergy between climate and the economy Raise awareness re – climate change and build capacity for combating its impact Contribute to solving climate change issue and achieving the MDGs (KOICA, 2009) OBJECTIVES: EAST ASIA CLIMATE PARTNERSHIP

11 KOICA CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAM APPROACHES Selection of the best-suited theme and scheme to maximize effectiveness and efficiency of the assistance program Pilot projects in renewable energy will be implemented New technology will be disseminated Regional adaptation strategies will be applied for awareness – raising and capacity building Framework for energy policy consultations and financial support will be established (KOICA, 2009)
