MANAGING SPACE, EQUIPMENT, & TIME Ch 8

Physical Education  Phys ed. lesson aim to make movement purposeful; moving is point of learning  Differs from classroom b/c use equipment  Size of work area affects protocols & movement

Equipment Considerations  Transporting Equipment  Distributing to learners  Returning equipment

Space Considerations  Personal space – your physical space w/o moving  General space – all members of class working; boundaries

Time Considerations  Stopping work/ Getting attention, Equipment  Protocol for resuming work  Signal for gathering  Can save time with signals, count downs, whistle  Can waste time

Stations in Management  Learning center so students can concentrate on a skill, instructional strategy  Efficient use of space, useful w/limited equipment, efficient use of time

Stations  How many: depends on class size, equip. & space; younger learners w/less experience fewer stations, older students rotate through more  Location & boundaries: tape, cones, color

Stations  How group learners: 2-3 per station is ideal, distribute evenly  Communicate task: task cards, posters, handouts, clear directions, simple, brief  Rotation: time, each participate, make sure they know where they going next

Stations  Teacher role: primary organizer, facilitator  Monitor class for correct progression, correct task at each station, safety & behavior  When to avoid: unfamiliar tasks, not to introduce skills, tasks not similar in time
