For centuries, three religions lived and worked together in Spain. In 1492, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand married and unified the country. It was Catholic only. They started the Spanish Inquisition that hunted down and punished any Jews or Muslims in Spain. They were forced to convert, leave Spain, or be severely punished. The Inquisition was ruthless in carrying out this duty. Even if Muslims or Jews converted, they were punished if they were suspected of keeping their old beliefs. The Inquisition began to punish Christians as well. They punished all Muslims, Jews, and Protestants. The Catholic Church had no opposition in Spain and became very strong.
