In class essay: We have read multiple nonfiction pieces this year. Your essay needs to focus on a similarity that three of the pieces share. The similarities can be the styles of the pieces, subject matters, authors’ purposes, or any other topic you can think of. The paper is to be five paragraphs. The paper should be 1-2 pages double-spaced (More writing is welcome, but make sure it is written well or writing more can hurt you). MLA format must be followed (citations and paper format included) A separate Works Cited page is needed

MLA Format Maxson 1 Liz Maxson ENG 10 Maxson 09/12/14 Title of Paper (Do not put the assignment!) Your paper should look like this. It should use Times New Roman font that is 12 points, be double-spaced, and include a heading, title, and page numbers. Your paragraphs should go in order (Introduction, Body paragraph 1, Body paragraph 2, Body paragraph 3, and Conclusion). You need to use a citation (direct or indirect) from each nonfiction piece you discuss and your Works Cited page must include all necessary information.

Direct Citations Direct citations use quotation marks and the exact words from a text: Harriet Tubman was not a typical slave girl, she rebelled openly: “Harriet never liked to work as a servant in the house, so because of her rebellious nature, she was soon ordered to the fields,” (Hughes 262).

Indirect Citations Indirect citations refer to larger portions of text or an entire work. No quotation marks are needed: Brown works very hard to write a letter “A” with his left foot. His story, “from My Left Foot” illustrates what humans are capable of, even when they have disabilities.

MLA Format (continued) Works Cited Brown, Christy. “from My Left Foot.” Mirrors and Windows: Connecting With Literature. Ed. Brenda Owens. St. Paul, MN: EMC Publishing, 2012. 235-40. Hughes, Langston. “Harriet Tubman: The Moses of her People.” Mirrors and Windows: Connecting With Literature. Ed. Brenda Owens. St. Paul, MN: EMC Publishing, 2012. 261-8. Uchida, Yoshiko. “from Desert Exile: The Uprooting of a Japanese- American Family.” Mirrors and Windows: Connecting With Literature. Ed. Brenda Owens. St. Paul, MN: EMC Publishing, 2012. 247-54.
