No Vocabulary Assignment for Fences. We’ll pick up with Vocabulary soon. Should work on Fences Analysis Activities and MWR

5 Troy/Rose in Fences Act 1, Scene 2 Rose’s song about a fence (p.21—another mention of this key symbol) Rose likes to play the lottery Troy criticizes her; he also criticizes Cory’s desire to play football and Lyons’ desire to play music. Troy is practical and responsible, the opposite of Rose’s “foolishness.” Troy is also hypocritical and insensitive to her needs (will also see later on). Think about how Rose played along with his “foolishness” as he talked about his battle with Death in Act 1. How is Troy “escaping” from reality?

6 Gabe in Fences Act 1, Scene 2 “I just moved over to Miss Pearl’s to keep out from in your way” (25). What has Troy subconsciously told him? Thinks he is the Angel Gabriel Saw Troy’s name in the Book of Judgment but not in the same place as Rose’s (p. 26) Here’s the hellhounds coming (p. 27) “Better get ready for the judgment” (p. 27)—To whom is he speaking?

7 Gabe in Fences Act 1, Scene 2 Troy talks about Gabe’s injury in the war; how unfair the government (for whom he fought) treats him Think about the connection between Troy and his attempt to play baseball and the unfairness he sees in his job How does this influence how he treats Cory’s desire to play football? Troy feels guilty that Gabe’s money (government pension/disability) is the only way he has been able to buy a house (p. 28). Gabe has done something Troy can’t do, even with hard work
