Chapter 14: Land Section 1: How We Use Land

2 Land Use and Land Cover Purposes for Land: Farming Mining
Building Cities and Highways Recreation Land Cover: What your find on a patch of land. (How it is used depends on what is on it)

3 Land Use and Land Cover Types of Land Cover Forest Field of Grain
Parking Lot

4 **Most land provides one or more resources used by humans.

5 Urban Land vs. Rural Land
Urban Land: land that is covered mainly with buildings and roads. **U.S. Census Bureau: Urban areas contain 2,500 or more people and have a governing body (city council) Rural Land: Land that contains relatively few people and large areas of open space.

6 **Relative proportion of each of the types of land cover.

7 Where We Live Until about 1850, most people lived in rural areas.
Occupations of those people: Farmers: grew crops and raised livestock. Forest Managers Miners Mill workers Manufacturers of goods for town **What changed this pattern??

8 From Farms to Factories
Industrial Revolution Changed Lifestyles Machinery made it possible for fewer people to operate a farm or grain mill. Better transportation allowed manufacturers to live far from costumers. People moved to cities to find jobs.

9 Result of Industrial Revolution
Urban areas grew rapidly during 20th century. Urban areas spread over more land. : movement of people from rural areas to urban areas happened quickly in developed countries.

11 The Urban-Rural Connection
People are dependent on resources produced in rural areas. Clean drinking water Fertile soil Land for crops Trees for wood and paper Oxygen Ecosystem Services: resources produced by natural and artificial ecosystems.

12

13 Supporting Urban Areas
The area of rural land needed to support one person depends on many factors: Climate Standard of living How effeciently resources are used

14 Example: In a wet climate, most agriculture depends on rain and does not depend on areas of lakes and rivers for irrigation.

15 Developed Countries: each person uses the ecosystem services provided by about 8 hectares (20 acres) of land and water. US: each person uses 12 hectares (30 acres) Germany: 6 hectares (15 acres) Developing Countries: people may not have access to all the resources for a healthy life. They may use less than 1 hectare (2.5) per person.
