1 Anatomy lecture Anterior and lateral compartment of leg

2 Bones of leg Bones of leg: Tibia fibula

3 Muscles of the anterior leg
Tibialis anterior Extensor digitorum longus Extensor hallucis longus Peroneus tertius

4 Anterior leg Cross section of anterior leg

5 Origin: Tibialis anterior Insertion: Nerve: Action: Shaft of the tibia
interosseous membrane Insertion: Medial cuneiform and base of First metatarsal. Nerve: Deep peroneal nerve Action: Extend the foot Help to maintain the medial longitudinal Arch of foot

6 Extensor digitorum longus
Origin: Shaft of fibula Interosseous membrane Insertion: Extensor expansion of latral four toes Nerve: deep peroneal nerve Action: Extends toes

7 Extensor hallucis longus
Origin: Shaft of fibula Interosseous membrane Insertion: base of distal phalanx Of big toe Nerve: Deep peroneal nerve Action: Extend big toe Dorsoiflexes foot

8 Peroneus tertius muscle
Origin Shaft of fibula Interosseous membrane Insertion: Base of fifth metatarsal Nerve: Deep peroneal nerve Action: Dorsiflexes foot Evertion at subtalar and tarsal joint

9 Innervations and blood supply of anterior leg
Deep peroneal nerve Is a branch from Common peroneal nerve. Anterior tibial artery is a branch of popliteal artery

10 Muscles of the lateral leg
Peroneus longus Peroneus brevis

11 Peroneus longus muscle
Origin: Shaft of fibula Insertion: Base of first metatarsal Medial cuneiform Nerve: Superficial peroneal nerve Action: Planter flexes, eversion of foot Support lateral longitudinal arch This the only muscle which crosses The planter surface to maintain Transverse arch of foot

12 Peroneus brevis muscle
Origin: Shaft of fibula Insertion: Base of fifth metatarsal Bone Nerve : Superficial peroneal nerve Action: Planter flexes foot Hold up lateral longtidunal arch
