The Garmin Traffic System 800 Traffic Alerting System (TAS)

Theory of operation  For ADS-B out equipped aircraft: System uses ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) data from participating aircraft to enhance position accuracy of potential threats  Fro Mode S & C equipped aircraft: Unit interrogates Transponders of intruding aircraft while monitoring replies as well as transmitting its own signal  System derives distance, relative bearing and if reported, altitude and vertical trend of any Transponder equipped aircraft within surveillance range (up to 12nm in front)  System uses information to calculate the CPA (Closest Point of Approach), if CPA meets the criteria for a TA (Traffic Advisory), a visual & aural alert is provided  System monitors airspace +/- 10,000’ of own altitude and up to 12nm in front (side range reduced due to signal pattern)

GTS-800 TAS Abilities  Capable of tracking up to 45 aircraft with Mode A/C Transponders & 30 with Mode S  Maximum of 30 aircraft displayed at one time  Provides visual representation of Proximity Aircraft (PA) and TA & aural TA warnings e.g “Traffic 2 o’clock, one mile, same altitude”  System CANNOT detect aircraft without a Transponder (Visual identification still primary means of detecting threats)

GTS-800 TAS ADS-B Antenna  The Archer is equipped with two ADS-B Antenna  One fitted on top of the fuselage  One fitted underneath the fuselage  This layout allows a constant transmitting and reception of signals even when the aircraft is banked

GTS-800 TAS Display

GTS-800 TAS Test Function  GTS-800 is equipped with a self-test function that must be operated prior to flight  Test function is initiated by pilot by use of a soft key  While testing, this screen will be displayed  After test is complete and if operating normally, an aural message of “TAS system test pass” will be heard and screen will return to normal  If unsuccessful, aural message of “TAS system test fail” will be heard and a visual warning will appear on screen

GTS-800 TAS Altitude mode  GTS-800 can operate in one of four possible altitude modes  Altitude mode is selected by use of a soft key while on the TAS screen  Above: Displays PA and TA from 9900’ above to 2700’ below aircraft  Normal: Displays PA and TA from 2700’ above to 2700’ below aircraft (NOTE: This is the mode to be used as per CAEOAA SOPs)  Below: Displays PA and TA from 2700’ above to 9900’ below the aircraft  Unrestricted: Displays PA and TA from 9900’ above to 9900’ feet below the aircraft

GTS-800 TAS FLT ID Mode  Flight ID mode allows the tail number/callsign of an aircraft (when available) to be displayed on screen  Flight ID mode is initiated by use of a soft key while on the TAS screen  Note: Flight ID is selected to ‘OFF’ as per CAEOAA SOPs

TA Alerting Conditioning  GTS-800 automatically adjusts TA sensitivity levels to reduce the likelihood of nuisance warnings  Level A: Groundspeed < 120kts  Level B: Groundspeed > 120kts

GTS-800 TAS Initialization before flight The following actions are to be carried out by the pilot to setup the TAS prior to flight (Refer to the Flight Manual for a full list of actions)  Select the ‘Traffic Map’ screen on the MFD using FMS knobs  Check range rings are set at ‘2nm/6nm’ and adjust using Range Knob  Perform Test Function by pressing the ‘Test’ Soft Key  Switch to ‘Operate’ by pressing the ‘Operate’ Soft Key (Verify that “Operating” is displayed in the ‘Operating mode’ window  Ensure ‘Alt mode’ is selected to ‘Normal’ by pressing the ‘Alt mode’ Soft Key and then by pressing the ‘Normal’ Soft key (Verify that ‘Normal’ is being displayed in the ‘Alt mode’ window)  Ensure that ‘FLT ID’ mode is NOT active, cycle on or off by pressing the ‘FLT ID’ Soft Key
