Introduction to the Human Body

Central Questions: What does our body need to survive? What can our bodies do? What is our body made of? How does our body work? What does our body need to survive? What can our bodies do? What is our body made of? How does our body work?

Start with this: What do the following things have in common? Paragraphs Chapters Words Sentences Book Paragraphs Chapters Words Sentences Book

What do these following things have in common? Organs Cells Organism Systems Tissues Organs Cells Organism Systems Tissues

Fill in the blanks: An organism is made of one or more ___________, which are made of one or more ___________, which are made of one of more different types of ___________, which are made of one or more different types of ____________! That’s it! An organism is made of one or more ___________, which are made of one or more ___________, which are made of one of more different types of ___________, which are made of one or more different types of ____________! That’s it!

Before applying this idea to our own body, apply it to a NON-HUMAN. List these terms: cells, tissues, organ, system, and organism. Now match them to these terms: leaf, spongy layer and palisade layer, cells with chloroplasts, plant, photosynthesis.

Try another one (human). Remember: cell, tissue, organ, system, organism. Nervous, Eye, Clear Cells, Human, Cornea. (Match them up!) Nervous, Eye, Clear Cells, Human, Cornea. (Match them up!)

Human Cells How many total cells make up just one human body?

There is no way to know for sure, but scientists estimate between 10 - 50 TRILLION cells make up each human body, but there are possibly as many as 100 TRILLION in every human body!

How many different TYPES of cells are there in the human body?

There are at least 210 different TYPES of human body cells. List as many as you can!

How many different types of tissues are there in the human body?

There are four primary types of human body tissues: (We’ll learn more about these later.) Connective Tissue Epithelial Tissue Muscle Tissue Nervous Tissue Connective Tissue Epithelial Tissue Muscle Tissue Nervous Tissue

How many organs are there in the human body?

22 - 25 organs! (Depends on who is counting.) List as many as you can.

How many systems make up the human body?

At least eleven. (But again, it depends on who is counting.) List as many as you can!

Which systems help with the following? (Make a list.) Taking in “good stuff” (oxygen, nutrients). Getting rid of “bad stuff” (wastes). Transporting “stuff” throughout our body. Moving our body around. Knowing what is going on around us? Communication within our body. Taking in “good stuff” (oxygen, nutrients). Getting rid of “bad stuff” (wastes).
