17 You’re a jobless graduate from Ihiala, Anambra State. You know that Ihiala is blessed with many important indigenes who are based in Lagos, among whom is Dr. Emma Okongwu, the CEO of Cadbury. You were reading newspaper one day and saw an advert by Ihiala Progressive Union (IPU) for the annual convention of the Lagos Branch of the Association, scheduled for next week Sunday. The notification advert, which carried the email and phone number of the signatory, was signed by Dr. Okongwu, who is the President of the Lagos Branch of IPU. Dr. Okongwu is also the Chairman of Consumer Goods Manufacturers Association of Nigeria. Identify the networking opportunities in this case and discuss how you would approach it. What action, if taken, crosses the border of networking? 17

18 Join IPU if you have not joined Attend their meetings Be active in meetings. Give thoughtful contributions. Contest for positions if possible Send polite email to Dr. Okongwu. You may attach your CV Ask him to help circulate within his network Emphasize invitation for selection process (not being handed job) If he doesn’t respond, remind him with polite sms few days or weeks after. Send the sms on a Sunday evening 18

19 Good afternoon Sir, My name is Tochukwu Richard, a fresh graduate of Accounting from UNN and currently writing my ICAN exams. I am an indigene of Ihiala and was at the last meeting of IPU, which you chaired. I was greatly impressed by the way you and other IPU excos coordinated the event, and wish to one day also contribute this immensely to the progress of Ihiala. I finished university last year and just rounded up my NYSC. I graduated with a 2.1 and think I have a decent CV. I will appreciate if you could recommend me for invitation for job test in your company, or help circulate the CV within your network. I have attached my CV. Many thanks sir.
