2 2010 Census  U.S. Census counts every resident in the U.S.  Takes place every ten years  Data collected by the census determines representation in U.S. House of Representatives and used to allocate more than $400 billion in federal funds to local communities  74% of all U.S. households participated in the 2010 Census  The most massive participation ever witnessed according to the Census Bureau

4 What the 2010 Census Shows  Population  Race  Ethnicity  Age  Households

5 Population  The Region’s population has increased almost four-fold since 1970 Largest % growth – 69.8%Largest absolute growth – 416,878

6 Population  Region is slowly but progressively urbanizing

7 Population  By 2035, Region’s population is estimated to reach 2.4 million

8 Population  Region’s growth rate is declining

9 Population – A Closer Look  Population growth by percentage is declining – lowest % (20.4) increase between 2000-2010 Except St. Lucie County – 44.2%

10 Race  Black population has increased from 13.8% to 17.0%  White population decreased from 83.8% to 76.8%  Population describing itself as belonging to two or more races up from 1.5% to 5.2%

11 Ethnicity  In 2000, race and Hispanic origin treated as two separate concepts by Census  Significant increase in Hispanic population – 11.1 to 17.5 %

12 Age  Region is getting older  Reflects positive net migration of older age cohorts into Region  Huge increase in 85+ age cohort Highest median age – 57.3

13 Households  In 2010, Region had total of 956,100 housing units Increase of 320,000 units or 50.1% Largest increase by % - 86%
