Scientists Study Remains Mary Leakey – an archaeologist who made important discoveries about prehistory –Found bones in East Africa that belonged to hominid from 1.5 million years ago Donald Johanson – an archaeologist who found bones of first hominid with ability to walk on two legs, Lucy, who lived c. 3 million years ago

Hominids and Early Humans Hominid – is an early ancestor of humans ---- NOT human Homo sapien – “wise man”; Africa 200,000 years ago; migrated around world; same as modern humans; used many tools; developed language

Stone Age and Tools Stone Age divided into 3 time periods based on the types of tools used during that period –Paleolithic Era – “old stone” –Mesolithic Era – “middle stone” –Neolithic Era – “new stone” Tools – handheld object that has been modified to help a person accomplish a task –First tools – used to process food – called choppers –Later tools – used for various jobs – i.e. food process; breaking tree limbs – made out of flint
