2 INTRODUCTION IHI – Is an independent non-profit, – nongovernmental, – district-based health research and resource institute IHI – Established (1957) as field laboratory of the Swiss Tropical Institute (Swiss TPH) Based at Ifakara. – Up until today its collaboration with this institute continues

3 Sites/Branches Dar es salaam Rufiji Kigoma Mtwara Dodoma Bagamoyo = (> staffs, Phase I, Insectary, Training) > 600 Staffs

4 Project Portfolio and Research Areas Project portfolio – Has grown extensively over the past years – Open and continues to forge new national and international partnerships Research topics – Correspond to National priorities – Work in Line with National poverty reduction strategies National health policies and Essential health policies at the international level.

5 Research /Areas/Projects Thematic Groups – Intervention – Biomedical – Health systems – M&E = Institution strategic plan and goals 1.Communicable diseases Malaria TB (cohort, Vaccine, child, HIGHRIF) HIV 2.Non communicable 3.Cancers

6 Academic/Consultation Short courses ( GCP/GLP, QA etc) Nelson Mandela University – Develop and train (MSc’s and PhD) Sponsor staffs ( Core and Projects) – Different courses Projects = Capacity building – Pre-requisite

7 Achievements The significant growth of IHI is demonstrated – Increase in its project portfolio size from 6 projects in 1997 to over 50 projects to date. – The substantial amount and variety of peer- reviewed publications – Train a large number of staffs – Qualified senior scientific staff, a number of whom serve on national task forces and advisory panels

8 External factors/actors IHI receives funding from bi/multilateral donors. – The Government of Tanzania through its Ministry of Health – The Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) – USAID, Irish Aid, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF – European Union
