2 Who was Roger Williams? Forced to leave Puritan establishment in Massachusetts Founded Rhode Island. Believed Puritan church should split entirely from Church of England and natives should be paid for land.

3 Who was Anne Hutchinson? Put on trial and forced to leave Puritan establishment in Massachusetts

4 Who was Thomas Hooker? Puritan minister forced to leave Massachusetts and found Connecticut

5 Who was James Oglethorpe? Found colony of Georgia because he wanted protection for debtors.

6 Who was Nathaniel Bacon? Frontier leader in colonial America that led rebellion for land to farm When did the rebellion end? When Bacon got sick and died and his followers were hung

7 Who was Squanto? Native American that helped Pilgrims get food their first hard winter in the colonies.

8 Who was King Phillip? Metacom, the leader of the Wampanoag tribe

9 What was England’s first permanent settlement called? Jamestown

10 What was the “starving time?” Time when John Smith left Jamestown and people began getting lazy again and there was not enough food for everyone.

11 Why did the Puritans leave England? To establish their own church and escape persecution from King Charles I What kind of colony did they find? One with freedom to worship only Puritan religion. No other religion was tolerated.

12 What happened to Puritan influence in New England after the 1670’s? It declined.

13 What was different about the people who founded Massachusetts and those who founded Pennsylvania? Massachusetts only allowed Puritans to worship there, Pennsylvania allowed all religions (religious toleration)

14 What was different about the people who founded Pennsylvania and Rhode Island? Pennsylvania founded by Quakers who believed they had direct link with God an no need for ministers. R.I. founded by Puritan minister. Anything similar? Both governed themselves, bought land from natives and allowed freedom of religion.

15 What type of religion/church did Rhode Island support? None, all religions welcome

16 What are proprietary colonies? Colonies run by individual(s) or family (ies) What are royal colonies? Colonies run by kings Which colonies were royal? New York and New Jersey

17 What was the climate like in the New England colonies? Short, warm summers with long, snowy winters What was the climate like in the Southern colonies? Long, warm and humid summers

18 What was the Mayflower Compact & why did Pilgrims write it? It was the first document where American colonists claimed the right to govern themselves. They wrote it to help govern the colony fairly when they ended up in Virginia after their ship was blown off course and they landed in Mass. What was it based on? Fair and just laws

19 What were the Spanish borderlands? Land between Spanish colonies and English colonies What was their main function? To protect Mexico from European powers What did they promise escaped African Americans? Land if they helped defend Florida

20 How were natives important to Spanish missions? They kept them running. Why were the missions created? Convert the Natives to Christianity
