Before you travel, submit “Emergency Contact Details When Traveling ” form to your supervisor. Take the “JET Programme 2014-2015 Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Accident Insurance Policy Guide” for reference, along with emergency contacts like your CO and PAs. DO NOT FORGET your Residence Card, as it will serve as your ID when re-entering Japan.

Situations Resulting in Disciplinary Action 1. Violation of Japanese Constitutional law, other Japanese regulations, or the terms and conditions of your contract. 2. Behavior inappropriate to the duties of a JET. 3. Unsatisfactory performance of duties which is not expected to improve. (Article 28 of JET Contract) Cultural Heads-up Japanese contracts may not spell out what is or is not considered “appropriate behavior”. Just because it is not explicitly prohibited in the contract does not mean it is okay. If unsure, ask first! Ultimately it is up to your Contracting Organization to decide what they expect from you as a JET.

Think-Pair-Share So… what might be considered “Behavior inappropriate to the duties of a JET”? 1.You will have 1 minute to brainstorm on your own. 2.You will then have 3 minutes to pair up with someone (or be in a group of three) and compile your ideas. 3.Finally, we will share as a group what might be considered “inappropriate behavior”. Some important ones… Article 24 Prohibition of sexual harassment Article 25 Restriction against involvement in profit making enterprises Article 26 Religious activities and other restrictions Article 27 Restrictions against the operation of motor vehicles

Disciplinary Actions 1. Admonition 2. Pay Reduction 3. Suspension 4. Dismissal

Actions Resulting in Immediate Dismissal (From Article 7, description in Article 28)  Serious mental or physical illness or injury  Non-performance of work duties for more than 60 consecutive days  Any of the information provided within the JET’s application materials proves to be untrue or inaccurate  If the JET is sentenced to a term of imprisonment, the JET shall automatically be dismissed, and the CO will not provide any financial compensation
