6 1764 Sugar Act Placed taxes on sugar and molasses to regulate trade and create revenue ($) for Britain. Smugglers would be tried in admiralty courts without juries.

7 1765 Stamp Act Required a fee for all publications and official documents.

8 1765 Quartering Act Required colonists to house and feed British troops in America.

9 1766 Repealed Stamp Act But passed Declaratory Act Declaratory Act: Parliament could make laws binding all colonies “in all cases whatsoever.”

10 1770 Townshend Duties 1.Fees on tea, glass, lead, paper, paints. 2.Strict customs enforcement.

11 6. 1768 British Troops 4,000 British troops were assigned to Boston to ensure orderly customs collections

12 1770 Townsend Duties Repealed (except tea) British merchants suffered a 38% cut in exports because of the colonies boycotting British goods, so the Townsend acts were repealed. The tax on tea was kept in place to show colonists that Parliament and the King were still in charge.

13 1770-73 During this time King George III, and Lord North (The British Prime Minister) avoided further provocation of the colonists.

14 1773 Tea Act The British tried to impose a monopoly of tea on the British colonists. Meaning that they could only buy tea from the British and no one else.

15 1774 Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts) British reaction to the Boston Tea Party. The British punished all colonies because of actions taken in Massachusetts: 1.Closed Boston’s harbors 2.Massachusetts was no longer able to govern themselves. They would be under military rule. 3.Allowed British officials to be tried in England if they were charged with any crimes in the colonies. 4.Issued a stronger Quartering Act for all colonies.
