2 WHAT IS CULTURE? The behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, country or age group.

3 So, then, what is dining etiquette culture? The ways in which a particular country behaves or are believed to behave while dining.

4 Let the battle Begin… In the next slides we will tell about various countries and the dining etiquette culture they exhibit in comparison to America.

5 In this Corner… AMERICA Eat raw vegetables (for example: celery, carrots, and cucumbers CHINA Do not eat raw vegetables (always disinfect the vegetables by boiling them first)

6 Another Example… AMERICA Do not slurp soup CHINA Slurp soup in order to cool and show appreciation of the food. JAPAN Rude to slurp your soup

7 Example 3 SPAIN Breakfast is the least important meal of the day Don't expect to dine before 8:30pm; supper commonly begins at 10 P.M.: and don't expect to eat lunch at noon AMERICA AND FINLAND Breakfast is the most important meal of the day; usual lunchtime is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. And dinner is often between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

8 Example 4 America Have different courses (appetizers, main dish, and dessert) Japanese Meals are usually served all at once. Europe salads served after, rather than before, the main dish.

9 My final example… Indonesia, China, and Japan Eat rice every day America Although we may enjoy rice, it is not something we eat on a daily basis or as part of every meal.
