Innovation Project on EASA- Access & Inclusion By Shaifali Mathur

About Engineering Academic & Student Affairs (EASA) The Mission Statement: “To further the mission of the Dwight Look College of Engineering to recruit, retain and develop successful students to be leaders for the 21 st century”

EASA- Access & Inclusion (A&I) A&I was created in 2014- fairly new Aim of A&I: To increase the diversity at COE- by increasing intake of historically accepted Under Represented and Minority (URM) students To Increase URM women students in COE To Provide URM students access to information regarding Engineering degrees, financial aid, scholarships and overall support

Innovative approach of A&I to increase intake of URM students E12  ENGAGE (37 partner schools) ENGAGE Summer camps Spring & Fall Invitationals Summer camp reunions Counselor’s Retreat- Preparing the HS Counselor’s Call-A-Thon- Assisting selected students A&I Open House

ENGAGE Summer Camp 2015 Total students participated= 83 from various ISD’s in Texas

ENGAGE Summer Camp Reunion- Volley Ball Game Opportunity to have fun while socializing with other prospective students Informally connect with A&I team again and ask questions regarding admissions/ applications/ scholarships Becoming a little more Aggie…Whoop!

What exactly do students do in ENGAGE Invitationals? Engineering Department Tours

What exactly do students do in ENGAGE Invitationals? Cont. Campus Tours

What exactly do students do in ENGAGE Invitationals? Cont. Challenging Hands-On Activities & Projects! Earthquake Technologies, 3-D Printing, Android Smartphone Programming, #- D Modeling etc.

What exactly do students do in ENGAGE Invitationals? Cont. Meeting & Interacting with Student Body Leaders

Attributes of Innovation

Early application of the programs as HS Junior & Senior students/ prospective UGs attend these events 2. High Compatibility Uplifting URM communities by providing access to education The idea connects to the parents There have been no such formal bodies to encourage URM at COE High compatibility with societal, community & national needs 1. High Relative Advantage

3. Medium Complexity For A&I team Managing funds Complex to manage all the programs with perfection Booking event venues, preparing proper agendas, managing the connections and communication channels with POCs (Partner HSs and various TAMU teams), managing HS’s travel reimbursements, managing last minute cancellations/ modifications etc. For POCs, Department Advisors &/ faculty Events are twice-thrice a week- managing time They volunteer for other such events- being clear about the expectations of A&I’s programs

4. High Observability Leading To High Trialability Parents and the Students can interpret the aim of the innovation easily Emails contain flyers, photos, FB & Twitter links for the people to observe & try the options Hands-On activities & student project presentations allows students & parents to clearly observe the program’s purpose Easy access to information  encourages trialability

Compatibility & Rate of Adoption Naming the innovation- Naming A&I, ENGAGE Program Access & Inclusion: Clear to understand Indicates that the division has something to do with increasing “diversity” ENGAGE- Engineering Aggies Gaining Experience Specifies that it’s an Engineering specific program Mentions the purpose- for the students to gain experience Engage in Engineering!

Present Scenario The idea/ innovative approach has been successful Needs further improvement- with respect to arrangement and long term planning; reducing last minute drop out rate Comparing the success of programs from last year to present year Increase in participation by connecting with students and parents directly through social media & not indirectly through HS counselors only
