What is a blizzard? Blizzards are severe winter storms that pack a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities.
5
When is a blizzard most likely to occur? Blizzards occur in the winter and sometimes in early spring or late fall.
6
What causes a blizzard? Below freezing temperatures in the clouds and the ground are necessary to make snow and/or ice. In North America, winter storm typically form when an air mass of cold, dry Canadian air moves south and interacts with a warm, moist air mass moving north from the Gulf of Mexico.
7
How can we prevent or be prepared for a blizzard? You should begin preparing for a winter storm before it strikes. Prepare your house, your car, and your clothing ahead of time. Store water for drinking, extra food, first-aid supplies, flashlight, lamps, and candles for light. Carry a Winter-Survival Safety Kit in your vehicle.
8
How can you keep yourself safe during a blizzard? Wear several layers of loose fitting, lightweight clothing, wear mittens instead of gloves, and wear a hat. During an extreme snowstorm or blizzard, stay inside and don’t go out unless you have a lifeline fastened to you and to the house (especially if you live in a more rural area).
9
What are the effects of a blizzard? Snow can block roads and cars may get stuck. It could cause power lines to fall down. Heavy snow can disrupt modern civilization: closing down airports and roads, creating power outages, and downing telephone lines.
10
How can we recover from a blizzard? We can recover from this disaster by going to the Red Cross and asking for help. They can provide you with food, clothing, and shelter. Help a neighbor who may require special assistance.
11
How does a blizzard affect the environment? Everything gets covered with snow. When the snow starts melting the streets look all dirty. You may also get some flooding.
