BEFORE THE STORM HITS… Build a Disaster Kit Food Water First Aid Supplies Flashlight Other items Plan for each family member for 72 hours! Create a disaster kit for your vehicle and office too!

BEFORE THE STORM HITS… In addition to making sure that you have 72 hours of supplies on hand: Ensure you have sufficient heat sources Have enough fuel/wood on hand Have an adequate supply of warm clothes and blankets in your home Have items to assist with clearing snow Shovel Snow melt Have a weather radio to keep you up-to-date on the latest weather!

BEFORE THE STORM HITS… Have a carbon monoxide detector! Check and ready your generator! Bring pets inside during time of dangerously low temperatures Ensure livestock and outdoor animals have access to food and non-frozen water

DURING THE STORM… Limit unnecessary travel If you must travel let someone know where you are going, the route you will be taking, when you expect to arrive, and ensure you have emergency supplies in your vehicle Limit time outdoors If you must go outdoors: Avoid over exertion when clearing snow Watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia Maintain ventilation in your home to prevent toxic fumes such as carbon monoxide Monitor outdoor animals

DURING THE STORM… If you become caught outside during a major storm take these actions to protect yourself: National Weather Service recommends (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/winter/during.shtml): Outside Find Shelter : Try to stay dry and cover all exposed body parts. No Shelter : Build a lean-to, windbreak or snow cave for protection from the wind. Build a fire for heat and to attract attention. Place rocks around the fire to absorb and reflect heat. Melt Snow for Drinking Water : Eating unmelted snow will lower your body temperature. Exercise : From time to time, move arms, legs, fingers and toes vigorously to keep blood circulating and to keep warm. Avoid overexertion such as shoveling heavy snow, pushing a car or walking in deep snow if you are not in good health. The strain from the cold and the hard labor may cause a heart attack. Sweating could lead to a chill and hypothermia. In Vehicles Stay in Vehicle If you leave your vehicle, you will become disoriented quickly in wind-driven snow and cold. Run the motor about 10 minutes each hour for heat. While running the motor, open the window a little for fresh air to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Clear snow from the exhaust pipe to avoid gas poisoning. Be Visible to Rescuers Turn on the dome light at night when running the engine. Tie a bright colored cloth, preferably red, to your antenna or door. After snow stops falling, raise the hood to indicate you need help.

AFTER THE STORM… Stay Informed Stay tuned to your local news for updated information on road conditions. Ensure water is safe to drink, cook or clean with after a major winter storm. Check with utility companies to find out when electricity or gas services may be restored. Before you drive your car, take time to ensure your exhaust pipe is clear, brush all the snow off the car so it doesn't fall on your windshield while you are driving. Leave extra time for blocked, closed or icy roads. For more information visit: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/winter/after.shtml
