2 Work to do: Time to work on project

3 What are public works? Construction projects built by a government for public use. What are some examples of these using the Byzantine Empire? Bridges & roads Aqueducts Public baths Hagia Sophia

4 Who is the Patriarch? He is the bishop of Constantinople in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He called himself “First among equals”, the emperor relied upon him to enact church doctrine.

5 Who wanted to use the icons?
The pope in the west wanted to use these pictures or representations of sacred Christian persons. The emperor in the east did not want them used!

6 What is a hierarchy? A group of people classified by rank and authority. Can you give the hierarchy of the Byzantine Empire church? Emperor Patriarch; other bishops Priests

7 Who was responsible for the schism?
Well, it depends upon who you would ask! Remember, a schism is a separation or divisions into factions, especially a formal separation within a Christian church. The pope would say the emperor and his patriarch caused the schism because they did not follow church doctrine nor did they respect his authority over church decisions. What do you think the emperor would say? Based upon what students know, they should state that the emperor would say that the pope caused the schism because he wanted too much religious power. 1st, he would say that he knew his people and he should make decisions for them, not the pope who is far away from the empire and it’s peoples needs. He would say that his people do not need icons for two reasons; they are being prayed to & that is against the 10 Commandments & they are smart people who have the liturgy presented in their own language (Greek) so they understand the faith. He would argue that people should understand all that takes place during the mass so the liturgy should be in the language of the people not a language only used by the church. He would also say that the pope wants too much power and that making Charlemagne the Holy Roman Emperor took the cake and was the last “straw” because he (actually she, empress Ireine) was the true ruler through Constantine! The emperor would be a little upset with the pope I think…don’t you?

8 What are mosaics? Colored fragments of glass or quartz embedded in plaster to form images or designs The Byzantine Empire will become famous for this form of art in the medieval world!

9 Why is Constantinople a center of commerce?
Remember commerce is buying and selling on a large scale! It is a TRADE HUB – other trade centers are coming into “The City” to trade their goods in one central location!

10 Why was the Justinian Code revolutionary?
This codified law were laws taken from ancient Roman law & developed into 4,652 laws It extended rights for women, children & slaves Created a “blueprint” for other countries to create their own codified written laws

11 Literacy was important in the empire…
