Major Skeletal Muscles Do You Even Lift, Bro?

Vocab  Flexation = Bending of joint  Extension = Straightening of a joint  Flexor = bending  Extensor = straightening

Abdominal  Stomach  Sitting up, postural alignment  The rectus abdominus is the visible muscle.  The transversus abdominus stabilizes your back, and is underneath

Obliques  Side of body  Rotation and side flexion of body  External and Internal Obliques are along the sides  Having strong obliques can help ward off back pain

Pectoralis  Front of upper chest  Push up from lying position, push open a door  The pecs pull the shoulder and arm forward

Biceps  Front of upper arm  Lifting, pulling  Any time you move your hand towards your shoulder you are using your biceps

Triceps  Back of upper arm  Extension of the elbow joint (straightening the arm)

Inside of Forearm  Brachioradialis  Flexor Carpi Radialis  Inside of lower arm  Many other smaller muscles

Back of forearm  Flexor carpi ulnaris  Extensor carpi ulnaris  Extensor digitorum

Deltoids  Top of shoulder  Overhead lifting  Any time you flap your arms  Three parts:  Anterior  Posterior  Medial

Trapezius  Upper and mid-back  Moves head sideways  Upper trapezius connects your head to your shoulders  When you feel knots in your neck, it’s your trapezius

Erector Spinae  Low back  Postural alignment  Often called the “low back” muscle, but it does run up your entire back

Latissimus Dorsi & Rhomboids  The lats are the large triangular muscles in the midback  Rhomboids are between the shoulder blades  Postural alignment, pulling open a door

Gluteus  Buttocks  Climbing stairs, walking, standing up  Made of several muscles  Maximus  Minimus  Medius  The largest muscle in the body is the gluteus maximus

Hamstrings  Thigh-back  Walking  Made up of three muscles  Biceps Femoris (outer most)  Semimembranosus (mid)  Semitendinosus (inner most)  Don’t squat below 90 degrees b/c you could damage your knees

Quadriceps  Thigh-front  Climbing stairs, walking, standing up  Made up of four muscles  Sartorius- wraps around  Vastus intermedius- middle thigh  Vastus lateralis- outside  Vastus medialis- inside

Gastrocnemius & Soleus  Back of lower leg  When you push off for walking, standing on tiptoes  Gives your lower legs their rounded shape  The soleus is underneath the gastrocnemius  Tibialis anterior- rounds towards the front

Stand Up  Point to your…  Gluteus  Quads  Biceps  Deltiods  Abdominals  Obliques  Soleus  Latissimus dorsi

Muscle Contraction Challenge  Put the contraction cycle in order…

Muscle Project…
