2 Today’s objectives  Identify the difference between communication and effective communication.  List the forms of nonverbal communication.  Demonstrate effective communication in groups with an activity.

3 What is communication?  Communication is the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another. It involves a sender transmitting an idea to a receiver

4 Activity! See it, say it, draw it!

5 Now, what is EFFECTIVE Communication?  Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit.

6 Nonverbal Communication  Eye Contact  Facial expressions  Posture  Body language  Vocal Tone  Volume  Personal Space

7 When is this useful??  “Assess job candidates based on their nonverbal communication. You can read volumes from how the applicant sits in the lobby.  The nonverbal communication during an interview should also elucidate the candidate’s skills, strengths, weaknesses, and concerns for you.”

8 When else is this useful??  When leading a meeting, speaking to a group, or talking with peers recognize that nonverbal cues can tell you: --when you’ve talked long enough, --when someone else wants to speak, and --the mood of the crowd and their reaction to your remarks.  Listen to their nonverbal feedback and you’ll be a better leader and speaker.

9 Review  Today we…  Identified the difference between communication and effective communication.  Listed the forms of nonverbal communication.  Demonstrate effective communication in groups with an activity.

10 Activity!  Break into groups of 3- 4.  Determine who wants to be blindfolded.  Determine who wants to speak.  Determine who wants to give directions (2 people can do this).
