 Occurred from the mid 19 th to 1920.  Focused on women gaining the right to vote.  An 1865 disagreement lead the Suffrage Movement split into two groups: the groups disagreed on whether to support the passing of the 15 th Amendment, which gave African American men the right to vote.

 The two groups: The National Woman Suffrage Associate (NWSA), founded by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, AND The American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA), founded by Lucy Stone and Julia Ward Howe.  The AWSA focused on suffrage at the state level while the NWSA lobbied for suffrage at the national level.

 Eventually, the two groups reunited in 1889 (NAWSA); after all, both groups were equally appalled at sexism.

 Examining the history of the American Suffrage Movement exposes the brave acts of dissidence that caused hundreds of women to endure unjust punishments; however, ultimately, their remarkable accomplishments improved the lives of all Americans.

 Today, Americans remember and celebrate the 19 th and 20 th c. suffragettes: their history is as remarkable as the obstacles they faced and the feats they accomplished. STAMP COMMEMORATING AMERICAN WOMAN’S SUFFRAGE
