1 Cancer Mitosis Gone Wild

2 What is it?? Uncontrolled, unregulated growth of cells
Cell division happens much more rapidly

3 Cancer cells often look much different then regular cells

4 Tumours and Cancer Tumours can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumour cells stay in one place in the body and are not usually life-threatening. Malignant tumour cells are able to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer cells that spread to other parts of the body are called metastases.

5 Normal cells versus Cancer cells
Usually only divide to replace damaged cells Cell to cell communication Cannot divide in isolation Adhere to one another Can differentiate Uncontrolled cell division Do not need to communicate with each other Can divide in isolation Can metastasize (through circulatory and lymphatic) Can not differentiate

6 Cancer in Young Adults Approximately cancers are diagnosed in young adults each year Cancer is the main cause of early death among young adult women More young women then young men are now diagnose with, and die from, lung cancer Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men

7

8 Causes of Cancer Causes are still not really understood
Carcinogens are chemicals that cause cancer by causing mutations Lifestyle habits (diet, tanning, tobacco, alcohol, radiation, occupational hazards) Environmental triggers Family history

9 Journal Assignment Due on Thursday Marked out of 20 points
