Warm Up: Get out a piece of paper and writing utensil. You will be taking notes on my PowerPoint today. You will turn in your notes with your Portfolio. Then, answer the following questions using 2-3 sentences. Given what you know Martin Luther and the Catholic Church’s disagreement, what do you think will happen next? Why? REMINDER: CURRENT EVENTS THURSDAY OR FRIDAY!!!!!

After the Pope’s Bull Luther refuses to take back his statements and beliefs Pope Leo X excommunicates Luther. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V summons Luther to Worms to stand trial Charles V issues the Edict of Worms, declaring Luther an outlaw and heretic and forbids anyone to provide Luther with food or Shelter Prince Frederick the Wise of Saxony hides Luther for about a year – Luther translates the bible into German

After the Pope’s Bull Luther returns to Wittenburg in 1521 Luther and his followers created a separate religious group called the Lutherans Peasants Revolt Excited by the reformers’ talk of Christian freedom, Peasants demanded an end to serfdom German princes suppressed the revolt with violence, killing up to 100,000 people Luther spoke out against the revolt Some people rejected his religious leadership as a result.

Protestants Charles V goes to war against the German Princes that rejected Catholicism. Weary of fighting in 1555, they sign the Peace of Augsburg, allowing each Prince to choose the religion in their region. Eventually, all Christian sects in Europe that are not Catholic are termed “Protestant”

England Becomes Protestant Henry VIII wanted a son to be his heir, but was pretty sure that his Wife, Catherine of Aragon was to old to have another child. Asked the Pope for an “Annulment” because divorce was not allowed under church law. The pope rejected Henry’s request as to not upset Catherine’s nephew, Charles V.

England Becomes Protestant In response, Henry calls Parliament into session and they pass laws ending the Pope’s power in England. The king (Henry VIII) becomes the head of the Church of England. Divorces Catherine Marries Anne Boleyn Anne Boleyn is tried for treason and executed Marries Jane Seymour Produces a Son – Edward VI Marries 3 more times before his death. Henry’s daughter Elizabeth becomes Queen and establishes the Anglican Church

Calvinism John Calvin was only 8 years old when Luther posted the 95 Thesis, but he had a major impact on the Reformation Wrote the Institutes of Christian Religion in 1536. Wrote that Men and Women are sinful by nature God chooses very few people to save – “the elect” God has known since the beginning of time who is saved This doctrine is known as “Predestination”

Other Protestant Groups John Knox, a Scotsman, visits Calvin in Geneva and likes his ideas. Takes the ideas home and starts the Presbyterian Church Calvin’s Followers in France were called “Huguenots” Anabaptists Believe that people should be baptized as adults when they are able to choose faith Thought Church and State should be separate Refused to fight in wars.
