7 Definition of play: An activity that is undertaken purely for enjoyment or amusement and has no other objective.

9 PLAY Intrinsic value Play is undertaken for it’s own sake, there are no external rewards, it has no purpose. Play can be childlike, and allows an individual to be in a fantasy world. The number of participants, area played in and time played for are all not strictly structured. Fun Individuals play to enjoy themselves; non serious. Rules are changeable, negotiated and freely accepted. Spontaneous It requires little pre planning or organisation.

12 The objectives of play: For children Allows a child to test boundaries Allows a child to experience risk whilst keeping them safe from harm Enables a child to learn social rules (socialisation) – team work, sharing, the nature of rules and authority. Fosters independence and self esteem Develops children's respect for each other Offers opportunities for social interaction
