This is the choices a government makes to apply economic, military, diplomatic, and other resources to preserve the country’s people, territory, economy, and values To coordinate and direct all the resources of power of a nation towards the attainment of an overall objective.

3 HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM OTHER STRATEGIES? First, Grand Strategy expands beyond just military strategy, although it does include it. Second, Grand Strategy examines both internal as well as external factors Third, it accounts for both periods of peacetime and wartime Overall, Grand Strategy is an all encompassing strategy for a country

4 SOME QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUILDING GRAND STRATEGY What should the focus of the grand strategy be? What is the problem we are trying to address? Is there going to be consensus for the grand strategy? Is everyone going to agree on the problem and the course of action the grand strategy takes? Is there enough leadership to implement policies for the grand strategy?

5 REMINDER OF FOREIGN POLICY STRATEGY Isolationism – A policy of avoiding participation in foreign affairs. Moralism – A policy of emphasizing morality in foreign affairs. Pragmatism – A policy of taking advantage of a situation for national gain. Unilateralism – A policy of acting without consulting other nations. Multilateralism – A policy of taking action after consulting with other nations. Preemption – A strike first policy to defend against potential attack

6 EXAMPLES OF GRAND STRATEGY Homeland defense and the war on terror following the September 11 th attacks. U.S. policy of containment towards communism during the Cold War.
