Where do people live? How Geographic Features Influence Population Distribution

8 Oceans 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of a coastline. The recreational opportunities and mild temperatures make this an irresistible combination.

9 Mountains Mountains have long been seen as barriers to interactions between peoples and countries. 70% of those in the world who live in mountainous areas are living in rural areas highly vulnerable to food insecurity, lack of educational opportunities and high poverty levels.

10 Rivers Man’s need for water has always dictated that the presence of a river means the possibility of a city/town/village being settled nearby. Rivers offer drinking water, transportation possibilities and irrigation water for crops. For example, the Huang He in China, the Nile in Egypt, the Tigris/Euphrates in Iraq provided the setting for civilizations to grow and prosper.
