Interactive map!  Before we see what they did, we have to know where they went! http://bradshawfoundation.com/journey/ Elizabeth

 In the beginning, Africa, homo sapiens lived in hunting and gathering societies, which were of social equality.  Used stone and bone tools  Evidence of possible trade with other groups  When they moved, they moved along the coast because it was easier to find food and survive that way. This was called “beach combing”. Lauren

Into Eurasia  New hunting habits like using stone tools to open oysters  New technologies such as:  needles, weavings, baskets  Cave paintings mark the first real signs of religion. Lots of theories as to what they were for (depends on your perspective) :  Hunting magic (prayer for a good hunt)  Reincarnation  Rite of passage for young men Dylan

Into Australia  BOATS!!!  Many new languages migrated to Australia  Stayed gatherers and hunters for a very long time (long after the rest of the world switched over to agriculture-based societies)  Evidence of many ceremonies, stories, and dances  Tools of stone and wood Evan

Into the Americas  Theory: most moved into America on the Bering Strait (ice bridge) and down the west coast  Coincided with end of ice age (extinction of many large mammals), so a lot of the first civilization there died off.  Very little is known about migration into North America  Much harder to survive in the Americas, so evidence of a certain time period that they moved here is scattered and not at all exact Lauren

Into the Pacific  MORE BOATS!!!  Spoke Austronesian languages  First to migrate and take agriculture with them (after the ice age)  Started building stationary civilizations and cities, etc.  Negative impacts on the environment like deforestation, especially Easter Islands Dylan

And then most of the world was inhabited…  But migrations never stopped.
