2 OBSERVE & COPY THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR WRITER’S NOTEBOOK:  Who went to the movies last weekend?  The woman who owns the shop works in the morning.  For whom are you looking?  Whose book is this?  High cholesterol can affect the heart.  The effects of the Tylenol should be felt within twenty minutes.

5 WHO / WHOM / WHOSE  Who—a subjective pronoun and must be used only as the subject of the verb  Whom—an objective pronoun and must be used as the object of prepositions  Whose—a possessive pronoun and must be used to indicate possession of an object

6 AFFECT VS. EFFECT Affect is a verb 1. To have an influence on  EXAMPLE: The price of gasoline affects the economy. 2. To respond to the emotions of; touch or move.  EXAMPLE: The loss did not affect the team’s hopes. 3. To attack or infect, as a disease  EXAMPLE: High cholesterol can affect the heart.

7 AFFECT VS. EFFECT Effect is a noun… (in most cases. It is not frequently used in its verb form.) 1. Something brought about by a cause  EXAMPLE: The effect of his missing class was getting assigned to Saturday detention. 2. The power to produce an outcome or achieve a result; influence  EXAMPLE: The effects of the Tylenol should be felt within twenty minutes.

9  She was affected by the medication.  The flowers affected her allergies.  The effects of daylight savings were felt by everybody.  It had an effect on the way he played.  The results of the test affected her grade.
