7 Crisis in Massachusetts From 1764 to 1775, Massachusetts became a center of colonial protest and British reaction. After the French & Indian War, Britain passes new laws (Proclamation of 1763) and makes colonists pay new taxes (Stamp Act) Britain passes duties on British imports (Townshend Acts) Colonists protest taxes (burn stamps) and Britain repeals taxes Fighting breaks out at Lexington and Concord First Continental Congress supports Massachusetts, colonies form militias, letter sent to King George III Britain and the colonies exist peacefully, colonial assemblies manage local matters, salutary neglect Parliament punishes Massachusetts by passing the Intolerable Acts Boston Tea Party shows colonists’ anger Britain repeals most taxes, but leaves tax on tea and colonists must buy British tea only (Tea Act) Boston Massacre causes anti- British feelings Colonists protest taxes and boycott British goods Lesson 1-8: Reviewing the Fraying Relationship
