2 Lessons: 1. Rhyming Match - adapted from pg. 36
Tableau – a “freeze frame picture” of the children in the form of a concept - adapted from pg. 39 Silly Segmenting Words – adapted from pg. 52 Please see the next posting for my paper with the complete lesson plans, differentiation ideas, extensions, small group activities and center ideas.

3 Rhyming Match Goal: Students will auditorally and visually match rhyming words. Objective: I will match rhyming words. Read a story with a lot of rhyming words, highlighting words as you read. Draw pictorial representations and word on a large index card. (Need 4-5 rhyming sets.) Shuffle words and pass out to several students. Have children find the word that rhymes with their word.

4 Tableau Tableau – a “freeze frame picture” of a concept
Goal: While using known rhyming words, groups of students will write “What am I?” clues about their rhyming pair, while including tableau. Objective: I will write “What am I?” clues and tableau to help others remember. Read a “What am I?” type of book. Review tableau. Get into groups of 5. Options: Assign a word to rhyme with OR create a list of rhyming words Students create a series of short sentences/clues to help others guess the rhyming pair. Get into a tableau to represent a rhyming word. Other groups guess what the rhyming word is after the clues are read and the group is in their tableau.

5 Example of Tableau Lesson
Clues: I am sometimes called a bucket. I am used at the beach. I rhyme with snail. What am I? (Pail)

6 Silly Segmenting Words
Goal: Students will learn to segment words into syllables while clapping. Objective: I will learn to segment words into syllables. Create chart on the board. Demonstrate clapping my name. Each child claps their name. Children repeat the name and clap. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for each child. Review chart. Do you see any patterns, etc.?

7 Personally, I find that these lesson are most helpful for my Kindergarten classroom at:
Beginning of the Year: - Rhyming Match - Tableau – can use tableau technique for any subject, especially Social Studies and Science Middle of the Year: - Silly Segmenting
