1 The Four Basic Parts of Plants Leaves Stems Roots Flowers

2 Roots Can make up over half of the body of a plant.

3 Roots Functions Anchor plant to soil Absorb and transport water & minerals Store food. Propagate (reproduce) some type plants

4 External Parts of Roots 1. Root Cap Indicates growth of new cells. Protects growing part of the root as it pushes through the soil.

5 External Parts of Roots 2. Tap Root Long and thick with smaller branches Reach deep into ground to get water. Examples: Carrots and radishes store food.

6 External Parts of Roots 3. Root Hairs Tiny one celled hair- like projections of the cells located above the tips of roots. Increase surface area. Absorb water & minerals.

7 Internal Parts of Roots Much like those of stems with phloem and xylem layers. Phloem The outer layer. Carries food (sugars) produced by photosynthesis down the plant. Xylem The inner layer. Carries water & minerals up to the stem.
