2 The students will explain the impact of the bombing of cities in WWII by comparing the similarities and differences between the warring nations. Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session in Mr. Gregg’s Room. The Chapter 19 test will be Friday, April 8 Hand-In: Homework from Tuesday night Warm-up: Examine the picture on page 649 and answer the following: 1. What impact did the atomic bomb have upon the course of WWII? 2. How did nuclear technology redefine the second half of the twentieth century?

3 The Bombing of Cities Britain September 1940 Germany bombed London 1,000’s of civilians died or were wounded Goal was to demoralize the British morale Germany May 31, 1942 Britain bombed Cologne Dresden-February 13-15, 1945 killed up to 100,000 Did not destroy Germany’s industrial capacity Did impact transportation lines to the military

4 Japan U.S. B-29 bombing started on November 24, 1944 Japan ordered all men between 13 and 60 into the People’s Volunteer Corps Nuclear bombs in August of 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

5 Tehran Conference Stalin, FDR, and Churchill-November 1943 land invasion of Europe through France-D-Day Final Assault on Germany Yalta Conference Russia received Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands for invading Japan U.N. created Divide Germany into 4 zones Free elections in Poland

6 Truman wanted free elections in Eastern Europe U.S.S.R. did not want free elections Set up war-crimes trials A new struggle began with the spread of Communism worldwide An iron-curtain descended on Europe according to Winston Churchill

7 Compare and contrast the 3 presented in the PowerPoint countries. Be sure to include the impact of the bombing of each country.

8 Read Chapter 19.2 and prepare for a Reading check on Friday.
