This guide describes how to: - Register to the HiStory Blog (pages 2-4). - Change the view by zooming in and out (pages 5-6). - Create a new post, including: - Tagging and categorizing posts (pages 7-10). - Changing fonts and formatting (pages 11-12). - Upload and integrate images into your post (pages 13-14). - Add a comment to an existing post (pages 15-17).

Before you can write a story you have to register. You have the choice between either self-registration (see next page) or sending an e-mail to history-admin@fim.uni-erlangen.de containing your name and preferred login name. We will proceed your request as soon as possible.history-admin@fim.uni-erlangen.de

By clicking on the login link at the homepage you can navigate to the dialogue shown below. To perform self-registration click on “Register”. If you have already received your account information (via e-mail for instance) you can enter your username and password here instead:

To perform self-registration enter all information requested at the registration form. In order to validate your request, the field “word verification” has to be filled out with a couple of random characters shown nearby. You will receive at least one e-mail if the registration procedure was completed successfully.

After logging in the Blog interface appears. You can enlarge the size of the text by pressing Ctrl- + (Strg- + on german keyboard). That means: press Ctrl first. Hold the key and press the plus key (“+”) simultaneously. This works with all modern browsers.

You can shrink the font size by pressing Strg – (=minus). Ctrl – 0 (zero) restores the default size. By clicking on “Write” you can enter your first post now:

Write a title within the “Title” field which is mandatory. Additionally you should post your name in the beginning. In terms of organization you should categorize your post in the right window and add a tag. Tags are keywords or labels in your language that help to organize and find posts (have a look at the HiStory home page for existing tags). Don´t forget to click “Save” after you have finished.

Your post has now draft status. You can see the list of available states on the right hand side of the screen under the “post status” box (see also page 10). You can modify your post and its status at any time before or after you have saved it. To apply modifications after saving, click on “view post”…

…in order to have a pre-view of how your post appears in the blog. From this page, click on “edit” to continue working on the post and to publish it.

…a second option for working on your post, is to click on: “Manage” -> “Posts”. You will see a list of posts: in order to find your post, you may scroll the list or click on “previous entries”. Than, once you found it, click on -> “Edit”

Now you can continue editing: the Show/Hide Advanced Toolbar button gives you additional text formatting buttons. They work MS-Word-like. You can also insert formatted text from your favourite application with copy and paste. If you want to publish your post, change the status in the “Post Status” window.

In order to present all posts clearly at the HiStory home page, only an abstract should be visible there, containing a “read more…” link. To achieve this, click on the icon “Split post with more tag”: a cursor will appear: please place it at the desired line and click on the button shown below:

If you want to include an image, you should use the upload area and fill in the upload form. If you want to use an image previously uploaded by another user, click on “Browse all” and select the image you want to use.

Please check the size of the image before uploading. It should not exceed some hundred Kilobytes. Photos directly taken from a digital camera without image processing are usually much too big. Click on “Send to Editor”, to integrate the image into your post. Please note: the image will be placed in the text at the cursor position.

If you want to add a comment to a post, you can do it from the HiStory homepage. First click on “Read the rest of this entry” to read the whole post….

…then enter your comment in the reply form and save it with “Submit”. If you want to return to the home page click on the HiStory-Logo wherever you are. If you want to go back to the Blog interface click on “login” at the home page.

Please don’t forget to sign out at the Blog interface at the top on the right hand side, when you have finished. If you want to go from the Blog interface to the home page click on “View site >>” at the top on the left hand side:

If you have questions please don’t hesitate to send an e-mail at: history-admin@fim.uni-erlangen.de Happy blogging.
