3 doc.: IEEE 802.15-08-0506-00-0nan Submission ETRI July 2008 Slide 3 Crisis of the Energy Shortage Increased focus on the health of the global environment –Climate changes and controlling CO 2 emission Rising costs of natural resources used for energy creation –Doubled oil price for the last 6 months Reaction on the oil shock in Korea –Forced control on the consumption of energy –Ban car-parking based on the day of the week and the last digit on the car license plates

4 doc.: IEEE 802.15-08-0506-00-0nan Submission ETRI July 2008 Slide 4 Global Focus on Energy Related Issues Promoting energy saving through regulation and incentives Utilities and legislative mandates that seek to conserve resources and protect customers In order to optimize systems to meet government regulations, utilities will have to upgrade their infrastructure –utilities that have heavily invested in traditional meter technologies are likely to resist the deployment of new infrastructure

5 doc.: IEEE 802.15-08-0506-00-0nan Submission ETRI July 2008 Slide 5 New Infrastructure for Utilities In the face of supply and demand issues in the electricity market, the alternative system that supports capabilities like next generation of metering, data-exchange and electricity control –Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) supports data analysis and electricity load control with basic functions of remote meter monitoring The introduction of AMI allows customers –to control their own energy usage by enabling visibility of real-time energy consumption information –allowing customers to change their consumption based on price signals received from the utility AMI will contribute to improve electricity resource utilization

6 doc.: IEEE 802.15-08-0506-00-0nan Submission ETRI July 2008 Slide 6 AMR Market in Korea Two sub-markets of Automatic Meter Reading –The private market, which includes apartments and officetels, is led by the alliance of construction company and AMR company –The public market, which includes common households, is led by local governments or utility companies such as KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation), and K-Water In the private market, the deployment of AMR systems is common –Nearly all newly constructed apartment buildings are equipped with AMR system –Typically deployed using RS-485, and some companies including LS Industrial Systems and Korea Electric Power Data Network, are piloting PLC technology In the public market, –KEPCO dominates the electricity meter reading market with over 50% market share –KEPCO began a trial in the public electricity market in the late 1990’s and has already completed a CDMA based AMR deployment to customers having over 22,000 volts –KEPCO has been piloting a full range of AMR technologies to low-voltage markets for several years
