3 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT Weight and height - body size and shape During infancy GROWTH IS RAPID Weight gain is in the form of fat Development of the bones and muscles

4 THE BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM The brain represents 1/8 of the individual’s total body weight All neurons are present but not fully functional as they are not connected

5 EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Infants depends totally on parents/primary care givers Modelling or copying behaviour Express a basic range of emotions – excitement, smiling, crying
