What is Geography? Study of the earth and the way people live and work on it. Means “earth’s description.” Will help you understand the history of a civilization Uses 5 themes to explain what a place is like and why it is like that.

Theme 1: Location Where is It? Why is it There? Two Types of Location: Absolute Location A specific place on the Earth’s surface Uses a grid system Latitude and longitude A global address

Latitude Horizontal lines measured in degrees north or south of the Equator (0 Latitude) “Lat” rhymes with “Flat”

Longitude distance measured in degrees east or west from an imaginary line that goes from the North Pole to the South Pole
