4 Ice Lab Today we will study ice to learn more about phase change You will work in groups of 2 You will have the following equipment: 2 paper towels, 2 -3 ice cubes, magnifying glass, small zip top freezer bag,

5 In Notebook Write “Ice Cube Phase Change Lab”

6 Observation time Take 5 minutes to observe your ice with the hand lens. Write Observations in your notebook. Write as many observations as you can in your notebook in the 5 minutes. Use the five senses. Remember to make observations only, not inferences

7 Share talk time Let’s share our observations. Take 2 minutes and stop by other groups to see what they observed. Let’s share as a whole group and put them up on the board to see how many different ones we’ve come up with.

8 What do these observations tell us? Some of you noticed that the ice got smaller. What caused that? What inference can you make?

9 Let’s see if we can melt the ice quicker You will have 5 minutes, while remaining seated, to melt the ice cubes in the plastic bag as quickly as possible. Record in your notebook what things you did under Stuff I did to melt the ice I will give each pair ice cubes in a bag now Put your ice cubes in a plastic bag, squeeze out most of the air, then zip up the bag. Put the bag down then begin when I say go.

10 Time is up How did you melt the ice? What does it mean when we say melt? We added warmth or heat to the ice to make it change from a solid to a liquid Why did these methods work and why were some were more successful than others?

11 What to do? Questions coming up! Choice: Would you rather answer all 12 questions in your notebook, or answer just two questions and then listen to other student’s answers? Vote

12 Ok! what did we learn? A list of 12 questions will be listed on the board. You will be assigned 2 questions. Write one question and then answer it on the same side of the card. Do the same with another question on the back of the index card. You will then swap cards around the room. (Continue to next slide)

13 When I say stop, I will choose 1 student to read the question & answer on their card. I will guide if the answer is correct or not. Any card with those 2 questions will sit back in your seat. We continue until all cards are read. If you are eliminated listen to the answers from the rest of the class. (Remember the deal!)
