Helping Classmates Help Themselves Mr. Schriver - 2013

 Editing is how we check our work.  Peer-editing is editing classmates’ work ◦ Peer-editing helps us find problems someone else may not notice in their own writing because they know what they want to say. ◦ Is peer-editing about bashing other’s work? Of course not. It is used to get constructive criticism.  Remember that you are in High School now, and therefore we expect more maturing from you. Bullying, swearing, rude remarks will not be tolerated!

 Today, you will be working in groups of THREE to edit your work. ◦ Each person will have a role to play (see handouts on the tables)  Idea Investigator  Responsible to check the Thesis and Arguments and make sure they make sense.  Structure Strategist  Does the paper follow a logical order and are paragraphs, sentences, etc. put together properly.  Grammar Governor  Check spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.

 Once you are in your groups and you have your role, you will hand your essay to the person on your left.  You will now have someone else’s essay in front of you. You will have ten minutes to read it over and make corrections with regards to your job – i.e. Grammar Governor will be checking for spelling mistakes (among other things).  After fifteen minutes, you hand the paper to the next person in the group and receive another paper.

...and away we go! If you have questions, talk to Mr. Ball or Mr. Schriver
