4 TIMELINE On the timeline section, please write these sentence notes down: The United States began as 13 colonies of Great Britain. They “declared their INDEPENDENCE” from G.B. after numerous incidents (Tea Party, Boston Massacre, etc.) on July 4 th, 1776 and had to defeat the British in the Revolutionary War to secure this freedom. (1775-1783)

5 TIMELINE The United States first tried governing itself under the Articles of Confederation, but it failed because the Govt. was not structured enough to keep the country safe or united. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention was called and the states “framed” a new government that we still operate under today.

6 Amendments *An amendment is an addition to the Constitution.

7 Study Guide #2 Review 2.) 3/5ths compromise: The North and South agreement on how to handle slave population numbers. Only 3/5ths of the population would count for: -Tax purposes (Benefitted the North). -Apportionment or the number of representatives in the House of Representatives.

8 Study Guide #2 Review 4.) Legislative-writes or creates bills/laws. *Executive-Vetos (stops) or signs bills into law. *Judicial- Judicial Review can declare laws constitutional or unconstitutional.

10 Study Guide #2 Review *The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are called the Bill of Rights. They are put into place to protect our rights and liberties.

11 Study Guide #3 Review *Reconstruction is the period of re-building following the Civil War (North V. South), that ended with Union troops leaving the South in 1877. The Reconstruction amendments (13 th, 14 th, and 15 th ) 13 th amendment-Abolished slavery (Stopped slavery) 14 th amendment- Gave African Americans citizenship rights (Due process and equal protection of the law) 15 th amendment-African Americans right to vote (No Women were allowed to vote yet though)

16 Northwest Territory = (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin This land banned slavery from ever existing within the region (Northwest Ordinance of 1787). After the Revolutionary War the British were supposed to leave the forts in the N.W. Territory. However, the British refused to leave and instigated Natives to attack Americans.

17 Problems inside the country American perspective: The Northwest territory was theirs to expand the country in after defeating Britain. Native perspective: This was their land to stay on and continue their cultures. L IN CS

18 Jay’s Treaty The treaty achieved the American goal of the withdrawal of units from the British Army from pre-Revolutionary forts that it had failed to hand over in the Northwest Territory of the United States.

19 V.Major Events During Washington’s Presidency A.Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794) the American army defeats a confederation of Indians over tension in the Northwest Territory. B. Treaty of Greenville (1795) 12 tribes surrender much of present-day Ohio and some of Indiana to the U.S. government.

20 V.Major Events During Washington’s Presidency D.Pinckney’s Treaty (1795) Spain gave the Americans the right to freely travel on the Mississippi River and use the port of New Orleans.

21 V.Major Events During Washington’s Presidency B.The Whiskey Rebellion (1794) PA farmers refused to pay the tax until the American army enforces it. This upholds the power of the new federal government.

22 V.Major Events During Washington’s Presidency C.The French Revolution (1789-1793) the French people overthrow the French monarchy by executing King Louis XVI. Neutrality – the U.S. would not side with any European country in wartime.

27 Shay’s Rebellion *This event led by Daniel Shays, proved how weak the A.O.C. govt. and military was.

28 Marbury V. Madison/Judicial Review *The Marbury V. Madison court case gave the Supreme Court the power of Judicial Review (to declare laws unconstitutional).

29 Manifest Destiny The philosophy (way of thinking) that led America to claim the land from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts.
