They “declared their INDEPENDENCE” from G.B. after numerous incidents (Tea Party, Boston Massacre, etc.) on July 4 th, 1776 and had to defeat the British in the Revolutionary War to secure this freedom. 5. TIMELINE The United States first tried governing itself under the Articles of Confederation, but it failed because the Govt. was not structured enough to keep the country safe or united. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention was called and the states “framed” a new government that we still operate under today.

16. Northwest Territory = (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin This land banned slavery from ever existing within the region (Northwest Ordinance of 1787). After the Revolutionary War the British were supposed to leave the forts in the N.W. Territory. However, the British refused to leave and instigated Natives to attack Americans.

18. Jay’s Treaty The treaty achieved the American goal of the withdrawal of units from the British Army from pre-Revolutionary forts that it had failed to hand over in the Northwest Territory of the United States.

19. V.Major Events During Washington’s Presidency A.Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794) the American army defeats a confederation of Indians over tension in the Northwest Territory. B. Treaty of Greenville (1795) 12 tribes surrender much of present-day Ohio and some of Indiana to the U.S. government.
