1 ENGLISH A STRANGE LINGO
BY MRS AISHA RUKSANA DAPS (O&A) SEAVIEW

2 When the English tongue we speak. Why is break not rhymed with freak.
Will you tell me why its true. We say sew but like wise few? And the marker of the verse, Cannot rhyme his horse with worse? Bread is not the same as heard. Cord is difficult from word. Cow is Cow, but Low is Low. Shoe is never rhymed with foe. To sum up all, it seems to me. Sounds and letters don’t agree.

3 What is English? Modern English some times described as ‘The first Global Languor Franca’ is the dominant international language in communication, science, business, entertainment, media and diplomacy. Linguistics professor David Crystal calculates, That English is no longer the exclusive property of ‘Native English. The non-native speakers now out number native speakers by a ratio of 3 to 1.

4 FACTS TO REMEMBER Never use two negatives with a sentence.
Do not use apostrophes randomly. Furniture, Information, Equipment, Cheese, Coffee, Tea are un- count nouns. Nouns which have two parts are regarded as plurals eg:-glasses, trousers, scissors ect.

5 Nouns like committee, board, press,
court and assembly are used either a Singular or plural noun. Use Than when you compare two things or people, Then is refers to time. Nouns like school, home, work, church are used with out an article. Correct pronunciation is a must.

6 COMMON ERRORS ARTICLES A, AN, THE.
The is a definite article used before a noun, but not with proper nouns. Using noun in general form do not use the definite article eg:-children like to play. Do not use articles with uncount nouns eg:-I like to eat cheese. Some words have a consonant sound but begins with a vowel ( a, e, i, o, u) eg:-university, European, Uniform for this purpose we do not put ‘an' before it.

7 You use an article with proper Adjectives eg;- An American.
Some words begin with ‘h’ that we do not hear eg:-honest, honour, hour, we use ‘an’ with such nouns. You use an article with proper Adjectives eg;- An American. We use The Great Britain, The United States of America, But America will be used without an article.

8 THANK YOU
