2 THE TECHNOLOGY- THE PRINTING PRESS  Literally changed the world.  Prior to the printing press:  Books were copied by hand  Were limited to religious works (Bible)  After the printing press:  Books, pamphlets, and essays were printed with quickly  Started printing about non-religious subjects  Information could now be distributed with ease.

5 SIR THOMAS MORE  1478-1535  Famous for “Utopia” which describes the political arrangements of the imaginary island country of Utopia.  communal ownership of land where private property does not exist  men and women are educated alike  almost complete religious toleration (does not include atheists)  Why might a work like this get someone in trouble?

6 WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE  1564-1616  In his lifetime, he wrote  38 plays  154 sonnets  2 long narrative poems  His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright

7 ITALIAN WRITERS

8 PETRARCH  1304-1374  Best known for his poetry  Canzoniere (Songbook)  Trionfi (Triumphs)  Developed the Petrarchan sonnet, or Italian sonnet.

9 WITH A PARTNER ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION…  What makes a great leader? Make a list of characteristics and qualities (i.e. honesty, fairness). Answer this question on your guided notes.

10 WHO IS NICCOLO MACCHIAVELLI?  1469-1527  Writer famous for “The Prince”  First piece of modern political philosophy  The “prince” was named for Cesare Borgia.

11 ACTIVITY: EXCERPTS FROM “THE PRINCE”  Read the excerpt from the Prince on your own.  With a partner, answer the questions that follow.  This assignment is worth 20 points.

12 END OF CLASS ACTIVITY + EXTRA CREDIT  Do you agree with Machiavelli that it is better to be feared than to be loved? Using a leader from history or the present day, explain your opinion.  Besides Obama, can you name other three heads of state on the previous slide? Worth 3 points.
