4 Active Listening Focusing your FULL attention on what the other person is saying, and letting them know you understand and care –Nod your head –“Do you want to talk about it?” –Then what happened? –Don’t Judge –Tell me More about…

5 Assertiveness Passive- Holding back your true feelings to go along with someone else Aggressive- communicate your feelings in a way that may seem negative Assertive- expressing your feelings in a non-threatening way

6 Body Language A way of communicating information or feelings nonverbally –Movement –Posture –Gestures –Facial expressions Eye contact- meeting someone’s gaze

7 Cooperation WORKING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON GOAL Compromise- Willingness of each person to give up something to reach an agreement… –Middle ground

9 Friendship People look to friends for honest reactions, for encouragement during bad times, and for understanding when they make mistakes.

11 Casual friendships Friendships of Convenience –Neighbors b/c you mow lawns together –Classmates b/c of seating or a project

12 Close Friendships People with complimenting personalities tend to work well as close friends. –People who lack in one quality may have friends who have that quality Loyalty Honesty Empathy-ability to understand how a person feels Reliability

13 Opposite Sex Friends Gender Roles- behaviors and attitudes that are socially accepted as either masculine or feminine –It IS possible to have an opposite sex friend w/o romantic interest… just very difficult. –Sometimes it’s very useful once in a relationship

14 Making New Friends What was some stuff you wrote in your journal?

15 Friend Problems Envy & Jealousy –Accomplishments, appearance, possessions, popularity… boyfriend/girlfriend Transferring Anger –Sometimes you’re the easiest thing to yell at even if they’re not really mad at you. It just happens…

16 Cliques and Gangs Clique- a narrow and exclusive group of people w/ similar backgrounds or interests. (not very nice at times) Peer Pressure- a need to conform to the expectations of friends. Gangs- much like cliques –Prejudices- negative feelings about certain groups of people that are based on stereotypes. Stereotypes are an exaggerated or over generalized belief about an entire group (religious, gender, ethnicity, other…)
